Cancelling a deal

When a deal can be cancelled, how both sides agree to it, and what happens to the listing and any payment.

Sometimes a deal cannot go ahead. Here is how cancelling works.

Before the terms are accepted

Either side can cancel straight away from the Deal Room. The listing goes back on sale.

After the terms are accepted

Click Cancel the deal and give a reason. This sends a request: the deal is cancelled only if the other side agrees. That protects both of you from one side walking away after money or access has changed hands.

Automatic cancellation

If the terms or the payment deadline passes, the deal can be cancelled automatically. See Deadlines, reminders and extensions.

If the other side does not agree

Open a dispute. Our team looks at the record and decides whether the deal continues, is completed or is cancelled. See Disputes.

Money after a cancellation

  • Escrow: the escrow company returns the money to the buyer according to its rules.
  • Direct payment: the seller must return what they received. The Deal Room records the agreement; if it is not respected, open a dispute and report the member.

Your reputation

Cancelling after agreeing a price is sometimes necessary, but repeated cancellations are visible to our team and can limit your account.

Tip: Talk first. Many problems that lead to a cancellation — a late payment, a missing file — are solved with a short message and a small extension.
